Moderator visits NUPSG Legon Campus

In a bid to strengthen ties with the youth and encourage their spiritual growth, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, paid a visit to the National Union of Presbyterian Students (NUPSG) in the University of Ghana.

The visit, which took place on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at the Central Cafeteria, was a momentous occasion for the NUPSG as the Moderator interacted with the students and shared his vision for the church and its role in shaping the future of the country.

In his address to the students and the authorities of the University, Rt. Rev. Prof. Mante emphasized the importance of education and urged the students to take their studies seriously. He also highlighted the role of the church in shaping the moral fabric of society and encouraged the students to be ambassadors of the church’s teachings wherever they go.

The Moderator emphasized the importance of moral education in the development of individuals and society at large.

“You can set up a big university with everything, put all the money you want into it, but all it takes is for someone from Commonwealth to go to Sarbah and the person would be chased down and there would be fight and they would destroy all the things because you did not concentrate on moral education. Until we take moral education seriously, everything will break down,” he said.

The Moderator went on to explain that the development of moral life is the most important thing for any human being, and all other things come later. He noted that in the history of university education, the most important aspect of studies was the moral teachings, but this has since changed.

“When the bible says ‘Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people’, there is no way by which any country or institution can develop without concentration on moral issues,” he added.

Rt. Rev. Prof.  Mante’s visit to the NUPSG at the University of Ghana highlights the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s commitment to promoting moral education and values among the youth. The Moderator’s message serves as a reminder that the development of moral values is essential to the growth and progress of any society, and universities have an important role to play in this regard.

In addition to emphasizing the importance of moral education in his visit to the National Union of Presbyterian Students at the University of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante also expressed his best wishes to the university as it celebrates its 75th Anniversary.

“I wish the University of Ghana very well in the celebration of its 75th Anniversary. Let me just say that during the 65th Anniversary of the University, I was here as a student and I was a member of the Publicity Committee around that time. So, I’m just remembering with a nostalgic feeling. I hope the various committees that have been put together, will put their act together and will have a big celebration. I wish the University very well, long live the University of Ghana, my university,” he said.

As an alumnus of the University of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof.  Mante’s message is a testament to the strong ties between the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the university. His expression of nostalgia and support for the university’s anniversary celebrations underscores the important role that the university has played in the education and development of generations of Ghanaians, and the continued partnership between the church and the university in promoting education and moral values.

The Moderator also took the opportunity to answer questions from the students, addressing issues such as the church’s stance on social issues, its relationship with other Christian denominations, and its plans for the future.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Rt. Rev. Prof.  Mante expressed his delight at the level of engagement and enthusiasm shown by the students. “I am very impressed by the caliber of students here at the University of Ghana, and I am confident that they will play an important role in shaping the future of our church and our country,” he said.

The NUPSG leadership, in turn, expressed their appreciation for the Moderator’s visit, describing it as a great opportunity to learn from a seasoned spiritual leader. “We are grateful to Rt. Rev. Prof.  Mante for taking the time to visit us and share his wisdom and experience with us,” they said in a statement.
