Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye was inducted into office on 4th October 2020 as Ga Presbytery Chairperson. The ceremony came off at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana- Ebenezer Congregation, Osu.
Delivering the sermon on the theme: “Fruitfulness in Ministry,” the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, admonished all to endeavour to prosper in all areas of their lives by being duly diligent. He further entreated Rev. Dr Abraham Opare Kwakye to constantly keep in step with the Holy Spirit as he leads the Presbytery in order to be fruitful in his tenure.
As administered by the Moderator of the General Assembly, Rev. Dr Opare Kwakye took the vows pertaining to the office of a Presbytery Chairperson, after which he was declared duly inducted.
In compliance with COVID-19 protocols, the clergy, church officers and guests were invited to extend the right elbow of fellowship to the newly inducted Ga Presbytery Chairperson.
Education and Professional Life
Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye was born in Tema and had his basic education at the Deks Preparatory School in Tema. He then proceeded to Tema Secondary School for his secondary education. Afterwards, he studied at the Presbyterian Training College, now known as Presbyterian College of Education, Akropong. He started his professional life as a teacher in Mathematics, Technical Drawing and Technical Skills at the Presbyterian Junior Secondary School, Agona Kwanyako between 1991 and 1993.
He holds a Post-Secondary Teachers’ Certificate A from the University of Cape Coast through the Presbyterian College of Education, Akropong and a Certificate in Ministry from Trinity Theological Seminary. He also holds a diploma in The Study of Religions, a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Ghana, Legon.
He was granted an ESKAS scholarship (Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship) to study in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Basel, Switzerland between 2013 and 2014. He was appointed as a lecturer at the Department for the Study of Religions at the University of Ghana, Legon in January 2014. Subsequently, he was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in February 2020. His research interests cover Church History, African Christianity and Missions. He also serves as a part-time lecturer at the Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Missions and Culture.
Life in Ministry
Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye was commissioned by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana into the Holy Ministry of Word and Sacrament in 1997 at the Kaneshie Presbyterian Church. In 1999, he was ordained at the Zimmermann Congregation, Odumase Krobo.
Before ministry, he candidated from the Trinity Congregation, Tema North District. His pastoral ministry has seen him serving at Bethel Congregation- La, Christ Congregation- Adentan, Calvary Congregation- Haatso. He has also served as the District Minister for the Madina District, Osu District and until recently, Minister in charge of the El-Shaddai Congregation, Tesa Adjiringanor.
In addition to his ministerial duties, Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye has served in various capacities in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
At the Presbytery Session held at the Dzorwulu Congregation in June 2020, Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye was elected as the Presbytery Chairperson to succeed the Rev. Dr. Okoe Abbey. whose tenure has ended.
In his induction speech, Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye expressed gratitude to God, the Moderator of General Assembly, the Clerk of General Assembly, members of the General Assembly Council, members of the Ga Presbytery Council, immediate past Ga Presbytery Chairperson, the Clerk of Ga Presbytery, Staff of Ga Presbytery, colleagues and students from the University of Ghana, family and friends, and all who have in diverse ways contributed to his transition into office.
Reading from Luke 22:24-27, Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye noted that true greatness is characterised by service. He assured the congregants that he was poised to work diligently to execute the responsibility and charge of the office he has been called to, in line with the will of God. He outlined his pledge to the vision 1.5 of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, revitalisation of schools within the Ga Presbytery, support for the intellectual and welfare development of agents in the church for effective ministry and promotion of Presbyterian values such as discipline, integrity and service.
He paid tribute to past Chairpersons of the Ga Presbytery and thanked God for the honour done him to serve in this office. Again, he paid glowing tribute to senior members of the clergy who have been instrumental in his ministry and intellectual journey. He also dedicated his call and service to the memory of his parents, Mr. Joseph Patrick Yaw Kwakye and Catechist Nora Emelia Kwakye, all of blessed memory.
Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye is married to Mrs. Benedicta Kwakye and they are blessed with three children.
